The gardens at Hotel Bougainvillea make this one of the most beautiful places to stay and visit in all of Costa Rica.
Over 50 species of bromeliads highlight the diversity of Costa Rica and create a unique environment. One of the most stunning plants of this family is the Imperial Bromeliad. (Vriesea imperialis)
Bromeliads are native of the tropical and subtropical areas of the Americas. Most of them grow as air plants on the trunks and branches of trees or in porous rocks. Some of them, such as the pineapple, grow in the soil.
The most interesting fact about some bromeliads is the different colors in their leaves, what makes them seem like flowers.
There are three ecologies of these plants:
• Terrestrial bromeliads, with a well-developed root system designed to absorb water and nutrients.
• Tank bromeliads, which are the most common with a funnel in the center of a rosette of leaves collecting rain humidity.
• Air bromeliads, (tillandsioideae) with wire-like roots that attach themselves to trees, other plants or wood, not for food or water, but for support.
