1. What is the regular temperature in the area?
Costa Rica’s pleasant climate holds an average temperature of 22º C (72º F) in the Central Valley, and rising considerably in coasts. In Santo Domingo de Heredia, where our hotel is located, the temperature oscillates around 18ºC (64.4º F).
2. What is the time zone in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica’s time zone is the same as Central Time in the United States. (GMT-6)
3. How high is the city of Santo Domingo?
As Santo Domingo is located right in the Central Valley, it is 1185 m over sea level
4. Are dollars taken in most of the country?
Yes, dollars are taken in most of the country. However, it is recommended to carry some local money (colones) especially if you are travelling through rural areas, as businesses there regularly take cash only.
Credit cards are accepted in almost every store, hotel, restaurant, car rental or tour company (Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Dinners Club are the most common)
5. How do I exchange dollars for colones?
At Hotel Bougainvillea’s Front Desk we can exchange dollars for colones at a maximum of US$200 per room per day. In case of needing larger amounts, local and international banks are available along the country from 8 am to 4 pm (some agencies work up to 7 pm). These institutions will require you to present your passport at the counter if exchanging traveler’s checks.
In case of bringing cash, be sure it is in good conditions and try to avoid paying with US$100 bills, as many Costa Ricans to not take these. (Banks will definitely exchange them for colones or break them in smaller denominations)
6. Do you provide hair dryers and irons in the room?
Yes, we do. Hair dryers are available free of charge in each room, while irons are provided for an hour and under request at the Front Desk (both hair dryers and irons are free of charge).
7. How do I rent a car?
For rent-a-car information, as well as for tours, please contact our Tour Desk and they will assist you arranging the rental and pick ups, as well as with tour bookings.
9. How do I get from the airport to Hotel Bougainvillea?
To get to the hotel from the airport, we recommend that you hire a taxi from Taxis Unidos, which is a highly reliable service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Just make sure to tell the person in the booth you would like to be taken to Hotel Bougainvillea in Santo Domingo de Heredia.
10. Do we need reservations for dinner at your restaurant?
Although it is not necessary to book a table at our Vitrales restaurant; it is recommended that guests let the restaurant know about their having dinner in it, especially during peak season –November, December, January, and February. Moreover, this international cuisine restaurant does not require a jacket (tank shirts are not allowed).
12. Are pets allowed in the guest rooms?
For health reasons and convenience, pets are not allowed in the hotel.
13. Can I use my three-pole electricity adapter in the rooms?
In Costa Rica, electricity is 110 volt, same as in the US, and plugs are typically 2 pronged flat type. (Type A North American/Japanese)
Although travelers from North and Latin America will not necessarily need it, Europeans might require an adapter or converter.
14. What are the requirements to enter and leave the country?
Citizens from the United States, Canada and most Western Europe and Latin America do not need a visa to enter Costa Rica, just a valid passport and the returning flight ticket. (If you are driving while in the country, your driver’s license is valid for a three-month period)
On the other hand, travelers must pay a US$26 departure tax when leaving the country.
